Latin Leadership Council

The Latin Leadership Council aims to increase collaboration among the diverse student body for Latin and Hispanic-identifying students to voice their opinions about campus programming, effective leadership/representation, and advocacy at the U. Its purpose is to serve as the place to unite the University community and serve as a support system to the Latin and Hispanic population to foster educational and cultural activities.

We welcome all individuals who are interested in engaging in the Latin and Hispanic Univesity community, regardless of your campus involvement or leadership position(s).

Name Origin

After many engaging conversations, it was decided that the term “Latin” would better represent the diversity of peoples intended to be represented and feel included in the Council. “Latinx,” even though it has positive aspects related to gender neutrality, is a term created in the United States that has not been widely adopted in the country yet, and much less by societies in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Instead of using commonly-known terms such as “Latino” or “Hispanic”, “Latin” was chosen to not only be gender-inclusive, but also to be conscious about different backgrounds, personal identities, and perspectives present in today’s Latin America and the Caribbean that are not necessarily incorporated into the denominated Latino/Hispanic community in the United States.
